    Christ is Risen

      by Janka (Yanka) Kupala

Christ is risen! Joy all round us,
    All seems bolder, brighter-hued,
For, it seems that He Who Suffered
The whole world with His grace renewed.

Christ is risen! In a clamour,
O'er fields and forests floats the cry.
Floats out one thought of joy most holy,
As far as earth's expanses lie.

'Christ is risen!' sings the peasant
    With his poverty-stricken kin,
    Forgetting ballads of springs dawning,
    Forgetting, full-souled, everything.

'Christ is risen!' sings the orphan,
    The servant, trampled underfoot.
The wanderer in the land of strangers
Sings, by his near ones quite forgot.

'Christ is risen!' sing they also -
Those sons long lost to Christ's command,
Who ever are in secret plotting
Snares for our poor native land.

    Christ is risen!... Lord Almighty,
To Thee today one thought I raise,
May Belarus, my own dear country,
Rise to new life and brighter days.
